This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

To work around the problem temporarily, press CTRL+ALT+F9 to recalculate
the entire workbook.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2).
To see an example of the problem, follow these steps:
1. Save and close any open workbooks and create a new workbook.
2. Type the following entries into the worksheet:
A1: 1 B1: 3
A2: 2 B2: 4
A3: =SUM(A1:A2) B3: =SUM(B1:B2)
A4: B4:
A5: 1 B5: 1
A6: 1 B6: 1
A7: =SUM(A5:A6) B7: =SUM(B5:B6)
3. Select cell A5.
4. On the Data menu, click Consolidate.
5. Type "A1:B3" (without the quotation marks) in the Reference box, and
then click Add. Click OK.
Note that the formulas in cells A7 and B7 are not recalculated.
