The information in this article applies to:
A formula in a merged cell that contains a reference to a cell that contains another formula does not appear to be updated when the referenced value changes.
This problem is a screen redraw problem rather than a calculation problem. You can verify this by selecting a range of cells including the cell with the incorrect value and checking the sum in the status bar. That sum reflects the correct cell value.
This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
You can force the cell to be updated by selecting another sheet or another area of the sheet and then selecting the cell again. However further changes may not be reflected until the screen is redrawn again.
If you create another cell reference to the merged cell with the link, the problem does not occur. If you then remove the cell reference to the merged cell the problem does not occur.
