XFOR: IMC Mail Arrives in X.400 Address Format

SYMPTOMS

You address mail to a Microsoft Exchange 4.0 Internet Mail Connector (IMC) recipient or a Microsoft Exchange 5.0 Internet Mail Service (IMS) recipient and the message arrives at the destination with the "From:" and "To:" fields encapsulated in an X.400 address.


CAUSE

Your message is travelling over an X.400 connector before going through the IMC or IMS.

Once a message reaches a site and the site does not recognize the originator of the message, the Exchange server will encapsulate the message in the type of address format that got it to the site in the first place, in this case, X.400.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem and keep this encapsulation fom happening, the Microsoft Exchange Site must be aware of all originators and recipients that it handles mail for. You must either configure a Directory Replication connector or Import the addresses as Custom Recipients. This will allow the Exchange server to recognize the Originator and Recipients of a message and not encapsulate it.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server versions 4.0 and 5.0. This problem was corrected in the latest Microsoft Exchange Server 4.0 and 5.0 U.S. Service Packs.
