FP2000: Hyperlinks Do Not Work in Office Files when Opened From FrontPageID: Q229301
|
When you open an Office document (such as a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file) in FrontPage, hyperlinks in the Office documents may give the following error message:
If you move your pointer over the hyperlink, you may see the following text in the tool tip:Cannot open the specified file.
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\FrontPageTempDir\myfile.htm
where myfile.htm is the name of the file you are linking to.
When FrontPage opens a file for editing, the file is copied from the web that is open to a temporary directory. The copy in the temporary directory is the one which is edited.
If the hyperlink is a relative hyperlink, it will attempt to find the file in the FrontPageTempDir folder. If it can not find the file in that folder, you will receive the error stated described in the Symptoms section of this article.
If you need to follow the hyperlink while you are editing the page, use the following method to workaround this issue:
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
When you open the file in the application it was created in, not using the FrontPage interface, you are not editing the file from the FrontPageTempDir folder. Instead, you are directly editing the file.
When you use this method, if the hyperlink is valid, it will work correctly.
