FP98: Cannot Open Site Error Submitting Form

ID: Q189451

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When submitting a form that is located in a shared border you may receive the following error message

Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://<domain>/<subweb>/_vti_bin/shtml.dll/<pagename>.

The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response.
where <domain> is the domain name of the server, <subweb> is the name of the subweb that contains the page, and <pagename> is the name of the document you are viewing in the browser.

CAUSE

When the FrontPage Server Extensions process a form, they reference the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of the document that is currently open in the browser. However, if a form is inserted in a shared border, the form is actually contained in the top.htm, bottom.htm, left.htm, or right.htm file (stored in the _borders folder of the FrontPage Web) rather than the currently open page. You receive the error because the FrontPage Server Extensions are looking at the wrong URL.

RESOLUTION

Move the form out of the shared border file and place it in one of the pages. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the shared border file (top.htm, bottom.htm, left.htm, or right.htm) that contains the form by double-clicking it.

NOTE: If you cannot find the file, the _borders folder may be hidden. If this folder is hidden, you can unhide it by performing these steps:

    1. In FrontPage Explorer, click Web Settings on the Tools menu.

    2. Click the Advanced tab.

    3. Click to select the "Show Documents in Hidden Directories" check box.

    4. Click OK.

  2. Click the HTML tab at the bottom of the FrontPage Editor window and then follow these steps:

    1. Select the HTML code starting with the <FORM> tag and ending with the </FORM> tag.

    2. On the Edit menu, click Cut.

    3. On the File menu, click Save.

  3. Open the page on which you want to put the form.

  4. Click the HTML tab at the bottom of the FrontPage Editor window.

  5. Click where you want to insert the form code and then click Paste on the Edit menu.

  6. On the File menu, click Save.
