This article describes how to upgrade from Microsoft Personal Web Server (MSPWS) version 1.0 or 1.0a to MSPWS version 4.0. This article also describes some concerns specific to FrontPage authoring on the new web server.

Key differences you should be aware of

MSPWS versions 4.0 does not

Support the FTP service.

Support remote authoring of FrontPage webs.

Provide any form of authentication, Basic or Windows NT Challenge/Response.

Require that you install Active Server Pages (ASP) functionality by running the Asp.exe file. This functionality is built in to MSPWS version 4.0.

Installing MSPWS version 4.0

After you download the MSPWS file, follow these steps to install MSPWS version 4.0:

Double-click the MSPWS Setup.exe file.

Because Winsock 2.0 will be installed on your computer, you will be prompted to restart your computer when the Setup program has finished. Click Yes.

If you are prompted to remove the FTP service after Windows restarts, click OK.

Click Next.

Read the license agreement and click Accept.

Click Upgrade Only. NOTE: You can add additional components and functionality later by double-clicking the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel.

MSPWS version 4.0 files will be copied to your computer. Click Finish.

If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
