The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows
SYMPTOMS
You can edit and save pages in a Web under Visual Source Safe (VSS) control
without checking them out.
If the FrontPage 98 Server Extensions are installed on the server and
someone else does not have the file checked out, you can check it out under
your name but you cannot check it in.
For additional information about using FrontPage with Visual Source Safe,

CAUSE
This behavior is a feature of the FrontPage client when working in a VSS
controlled Web. It automates the check out and check in processes.
FrontPage automatically updates files in a VSS controlled Web when updating
the following items:
- Include Page Components.
- Pages used for background styles.
- Hyperlinks (after renaming files or folders).
- Shared border files.
- Navigation bars and page banners
MORE INFORMATION
When you save a file that you do not have checked out, several processes
occur in the background while the page is being saved to the current
FrontPage Web.
FrontPage first attempts to check out the file. If someone else has the
file checked out, you will receive a server error notifying you that the
page is checked out, and the page will not be saved. If someone else does
not have the file checked out, you can check out the file, save it to the
Web, and then check it in.
Updating Include Page Components
If the Web is under VSS control and the including page is opened by someone
else, the including page will be updated automatically and a new version is
not created.
NOTE: If the FrontPage 97 Server Extensions are installed on the server,
the including page will not be updated if it is open by someone else.
However, the including page will be updated when it is checked in and the
Web is recalculated.
Updating Pages Used for Background Styles
If the FrontPage Web is under VSS control and the page that is using the
style page for background style is checked out, then the page is updated.
NOTE: A new version of the checked out page is not created.
Updating Hyperlinks When Renaming Files or Folders
If the Web is under VSS control and the page that contains the hyperlink is
checked out by someone else, you will receive a server error notifying you
that the page is checked out. The page will not be renamed and the
hyperlink will not be updated.
Updating Shared Border Files
If the Web is under VSS control, the shared border file will be checked
out, saved to the Web, and then checked in.
When you check out a file that contains shared borders, FrontPage does not
check the individual shared border files. Hence, someone else can modify
the shared border files. You can prevent this from happening by checking
out each shared border file individually.
Updating Navigation Bars and Page Banners
If someone else checks out a page, you can change the location of the file
or rename the file in Navigation view. The navigation bars or page banners
will be updated in all pages even if they are checked out.
