FP98: Server Error Deleting File Linked to VSS Project

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to delete or rename a file in FrontPage Explorer you receive
one of the following errors:
- If the Visual Source Safe Database is located on another computer,
you receive this message:
Server Error: Source Control System Failure: Invalid Handle.
- If the Visual Source Safe Database is located on the same computer
as the FrontPage Web, you receive this message:
Server Error: Source Control System Failure: User <user_name>
Not Found.
CAUSE
This errors occurs when either of the following are true:
- A Microsoft FrontPage Web was linked to a specific Microsoft Visual
Source Safe Project (for example, $/myproject).
-or-
- Microsoft FrontPage is no longer integrated with Microsoft Visual Source
Safe. The Source Control Project check box is no longer available in the
Web Settings dialog box (click Web Settings on the Tools menu).
NOTE: This behavior does not occur if the FrontPage Web in not linked to a
specific project.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Restore Microsoft Visual Source Safe Integration

Method 2: Remove References to the VSS Project Before Removing VSS
Remove any references to a specific Microsoft Visual Source project before you remove Visual Source Safe from your computer. To do this, click Web Settings on the Tools menu in FrontPage Explorer, and then click to clear the Source Control Project check box.
Method 3: Rename the Service.cnf File Associated with Your Web
Rename the Service.cnf file associated with your web. This file is located in the _vti_pvt folder of your
specific Web. For example, if your Web is called Myweb and you are using the Microsoft Personal Web Server,
the Service.cnf file will be located in the following folder:
c:\webshare\wwwroot\myweb\_vti_pvt\service.cnf
NOTE: There is also a Services.cnf file. Do not rename this file.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
