CAUSE

The program may not be installed.

The program may not be properly registered in the Windows registry.

Some of the necessary program file association information may be missing or damaged.

You may be creating a new document in the Insert Hyperlink dialog box and not typing the file extension along with the file name.

WHAT TO TRY

Install the Needed Program

Install the program that is needed to open this type of file. Consult the product documentation for installation instructions.

Register the Program in the Windows Registry

Reinstall the program to properly register the program in the Windows registry.

Write the Correct File Association

If the program is a part of Office, rewrite the correct file association information in the Windows registry. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Quit the program that you need to register.

  2. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.

  3. In the Open box, type the following
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\<program>.exe /unregserver
where <program>.exe represents the program file you need to register again. If you have installed Microsoft Office to another location, use your correct path for the program file.

  4. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.

  5. In the Open box, type the following
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\<program>.exe /regserver
where <program>.exe represents the program file you need to register again.

Include the File Extension

When you enter the file name include the file extension. For example, if the file name is NewFile.doc, include the extension .doc.
