OFF2000: Missing Shortcut Error on Startup With Run from CD/Network Installation

ID: Q230843

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows, you may receive the following error:

The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Microsoft Office.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you install Office to run from CD or from network server and then the CD or network server is not available.

A shortcut called Microsoft Office is placed in the startup folder when you install Office 2000. This automatically starts when Windows is started. The error is produced because the shortcut is linked to OSA9.exe on your CD or network server, and the CD or server is unavailable.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, copy OSA9.exe to your hard drive. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Office 2000 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

  2. Start Windows Explorer. On the Office 2000 CD, locate the following folder: \PFiles\MSoffice\Office

  3. Select OSA9.EXE in the Office.

  4. On the Edit menu, click Copy.

  5. Locate the following folder on your computer: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office

  6. NOTE: This folder may be on a hard drive other than C:

  7. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

  8. On the File menu, click Close.

  9. Right-click the Windows Start menu.

  10. Click Open.

  11. Double-click Programs.

  12. Double-click StartUp.

  13. Select Microsoft Office.

  14. On the File menu, click Properties.

  15. Click the Shortcut tab.

  16. In the Target box, change the path to the location of OSA9.exe on your hard drive.

For example, if Office is installed to the default location, then the path will be:
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.exe" -b -l

  17. Click OK.

NOTE: The previous steps will only prevent the error from appearing when you start Windows. If you do not have your Office CD or your network server is not available, the Office programs will not start if you installed them to run from the CD or server.
