OFF2000: Not Enough Disk Space Message When Installing Office

SYMPTOMS

When you install Office you receive the following message:

The highlighted volumes do not have enough disk space available for the currently selected features.

The dialog box displays hard disk space information and your only option is to click OK.

CAUSE

You receive this message when any of the following conditions are true:

You try to install Office on a computer that does not have enough hard disk space to accommodate the installation.

-or-
You installed Office to another hard disk or partition with enough hard disk space, but the hard disk or partition where you have Microsoft Windows installed does not contain enough free space for the installation.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use either method.

Method 1: Free More Hard Disk Space

Before continuing with the installation of Office, free more hard disk space on the computer. For example, an installation of Microsoft Office 2000 Premium with the typical components will need approximately 270 MB of free disk space. This is approximately 138 MB of disk space required on the the drive where Windows is installed, and 132 MB of disk space on the drive where Office is installed.

Method 2: Install Microsoft Internet Explorer First

A typical installation of Microsoft Office 2000 Premium requires approximately 138 MB of free space on the volume where Windows is installed, if Office is installed to an alternate volume. Part of this space requirement is Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 (approximately 78 MB). Internet Explorer installs to the volume where Windows is installed by default. By installing Internet Explorer before Office, Internet Explorer can be installed to a volume other than the one where Windows is installed. This will require less free space on the volume where Windows is installed, and may allow for the installation of Office to an alternate volume. To install Microsoft Internet Explorer to an alternate volume before installing Microsoft Office, follow these steps:

With the Microsoft Office Disk 1 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, click the Start button, click Run and type the following in the Open box
<drive letter>:\Ie5\En\Ie5setup.exe
where <drive letter> is the letter associated with the CD-ROM drive. Click OK to continue.

Accept the agreement and click Next.

Click Install Minimal, or customize your browser, and then click Next.

In The Folder to install Internet Explorer to, type the path to the alternate volume. You may also click Browse to navigate to the alternate volume. Make any other changes to the installation and click Next.

Internet Explorer will now install to the alternate volume. If you now perform a typical installation of Office to an alternate volume, the volume where Windows is installed will require approximately 100 MB of free hard disk space. Windows requires additional free space above this for normal operation.

MORE INFORMATION

Office also installs other items, in addition to Internet Explorer, on the volume where Windows is installed. This may include fonts, shared dynamic link library (.dll) files, and other necessary system files. Space requirements will vary based on the Office product being installed and on your computer configuration.
