OFF2000: Saving HTML With the Number (#) Sign Causes Browser Errors

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to open a Microsoft Office HTML document in your Web browser, you may receive an error message similar to one of the following messages:

The Page cannot be displayed
The page you were looking for is currently unavailable. The server you are trying to reach maybe out of service, or there may be a problem with your browser settings.

-Or-

Netscape
Netscape is unable to find the file or directory named <Partial Path to HTML file>.

Check the name and try again.

CAUSE

In Windows, it is acceptable to name files or folders using the number (#) sign. However, if you save HTML files inside folders that are named using the number sign or save Microsoft Office HTML files that contain the number sign in the file name, you may receive errors when you view these files in your Web browser. Web browsers interprete the number sign as a bookmark.

RESOLUTION

Avoid saving HTML documents into folders that contain the number sign. Avoid naming HTML documents using the number sign. Due to the nature of the HTML language, this character should be avoided unless you are specifying a bookmark.

Web browsers interprete the number sign as a bookmark. A bookmark is a location or selected text on a page that has been specially marked in HTML.

Inside HTML, you can use bookmarks as a destination for a hyperlink. For example, if you want to display a certain section of a page to a site visitor, use a hyperlink with the bookmark in its destination. When the site visitor clicks the hyperlink, the relevant part of the page is displayed, rather than the top of the page.

For example, if you browse to http://www.microsoft.com#helloworld, your browser will open the page http://www.microsoft.com, and search for a bookmark named helloworld, and display the helloworld portion of the page in your browser.
