SYMPTOMS
If you install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 along with Office, the Windows Desktop Update is not installed. This occurs even though you included a custom Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) package, in a transform that specified that the Windows Desktop Update should be installed.
CAUSE
The internal command-line that is passed to Internet Explorer Setup by Office Setup does not include the switch necessary for the Desktop Update to be installed.
WORKAROUND
To work around this, use either of these methods.
Method 1: Install Internet Explorer 5 Before Office
To work around this problem you can perform a stand-alone installation of Internet Explorer 5 with a custom IEAK package, including the option to install the Windows Desktop Update, prior to installing Office.
Method 2: Repair Office Shortcuts After Adding the Windows Desktop Update
If you have already installed Office, and the Windows Desktop Update is not installed, to create Windows Installer shortcuts for Office programs, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- in Add/Remove Programs, double-click Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools.
- Click to select Restore the previous Windows configuration, and click OK.
- Click OK in the Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools Setup dialog box.
- Click Yes to the prompt asking you to confirm the restoration of the previous version.
- Click Restart Windows when prompted.
- If you did not have Internet Explorer 4.01 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or SP2 installed prior to installing Internet Explorer 5, install Internet Explorer 4.01 with SP1 or SP2 now and click Yes in the Windows Desktop Update dialog box and then skip to Run Office Setup to Fix Shortcuts.
- After Windows has restarted, click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Double-click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0.
- Click to select Add the Windows Desktop Update component from the Website and click OK.
After following the instructions on the Website, and restarting Windows, continue with the steps in the "Run Office Setup to Fix Shortcuts" section.
Run Office Setup to Fix Shortcuts
- On the Start menu, click Run.
- In the Open box, type
<path>\setup.exe /fs data1.msi
where <path> is the location of your Office source files.
- Click OK.
