SYMPTOMS

When starting Microsoft Outlook 97 on a Microsoft Windows NT workstation with multiple users, you may receive the following warning:

The location messages are delivered to has changed for this user
profile. To complete this operation, you may need to copy the contents
of the old Outlook folders to the new Outlook folders. For information
about how to complete this change of your mail delivery location, see
Microsoft Outlook Help. Some of the shortcuts on the Outlook Bar may no
longer work. Do you want Outlook to recreate your shortcuts? All
shortcuts you have created will be removed.

You should answer Yes to the question.

CAUSE

In Windows NT, the default profile name for each user is MS Exchange Settings or Microsoft Outlook. The shortcuts on the Outlook Bar are associated with a Favorites file (.fav) which, by default, is the same name as the profile with a .fav extension.

RESOLUTION

Use the Show Profiles button in the Mail and Fax Control Panel to display the Microsoft Outlook profile, copy the profile using the user name as the name for the new profile, and set the When Starting to the username profile.

MORE INFORMATION

When each user logged in, there was a registry key under HKEY_Current_User (HKCU) that references information on the Outlook bar to a specific .FAV file. In this case they were all using the same .FAV file because the profile name was the same for each user. Users need to have different names for each mail profile otherwise this conflict will exist.

Create a New Profile for the Current User

1. Click Start, point to Settings and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Mail (or Mail and Fax) icon.

3. Click Show Profiles, and then click to select the mail profile you wish

to copy. This could be Microsoft Outlook or MS Exchange Settings.

4. Click Copy, and then type the current user name for the new mail
   profile. Click OK.

5. Under "When starting Microsoft Outlook, use this profile," click to
select the newly created mail profile.

NOTE: The wording could say "When Starting Microsoft Exchange, use this
   profile."

6. Click Close, and then close the Control panel.
