You have recently upgraded to Microsoft Windows 98 and find that when you attempt to Send and Receive mail to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) mail server using Microsoft Outlook 97, your connection is either terminated immediately or soon after the mail download process begins.
You are using a vendor-supplied modem driver that worked with Windows 95, but is not compatible with Windows 98.
Install the Windows 98 Standard modem driver for the connection speed and standard which your modem supports.
If you experience the dropped connection issue described in this article and the Windows 98 standard modem driver outlined in the following steps maintains your ISP session, you should contact your modem vendor for the most recent driver.
To Install Windows 98 standard modem driver, follow these steps:
1. On the Start menu, click Settings and then Control Panel.
2. Double-click Modems. In Modem Properties click Add. In Install New
Modem, click to select "Don't detect my modem; I will
select it from a list." Click Next.
3. In Manufacturers, ensure that Standard Modem Types is selected. In
Models, select the speed and modem standard which most closely matches
the capability of your modem. Click Next.
4. In the "Select the port to use with this modem" list, click the
Communications port assigned to your modem. Click Next. Windows 98 will
complete the installation of the modem driver.
To use the new driver with your existing Dial-up Networking connection
follow these steps:
1. Double-click My Computer and then double-click the Dial-up Networking
Folder.
2. Right-click the Dial-up connection used to dial your ISP and then
click Properties.
3. Click the General tab if it is not selected. In Connect Using, click to
Select the new modem driver you installed in the previous steps. Click
OK.
