OL98: (CW) ErrMsg: Unable to Create the Folder

ID: Q193591

The information in this article applies to:

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you installed Microsoft Outlook 98 with the Corporate Workgroup/Other option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate" if you have the Corporate Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to create a new folder in your Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox, you may receive the following error message:

Unable to create the folder. You do not have permissions to create a subfolder under this folder. To check permissions for the folder, right-click the top-level folder, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu. See the folder owner or your administrator to change your permissions.
When you attempt to move messages between folders in your Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox, you may receive the following error message:
Can't move the items. Item could not be moved. It was either already moved or deleted, or access was denied.

CAUSE

This may be caused by moving messages from a Personal Folder to the mailbox on your Microsoft Exchange Server, and then moving the items to another folder in the mailbox.

The second error may also occur when you have more than one instance of Outlook viewing the contents of the same mailbox, and you moved or deleted the item in a different instance.

RESOLUTION

You may be able to avoid the errors by using the "Exit and Log Off" command on the File menu, and allowing the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) Spooler to exit. This usually occurs within 15 seconds. You may then restart Outlook and be able to create the new folder or move the message.

If the problem persists, use the Move To Folder command on the Edit menu. Be sure to click the intended folder in the Move To Folder dialog box as the focus may not be correctly set to the folder to which the items were last moved.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 98.
