OL98: (CW) Outlook Address Book Service Is Not Available

The information in this article applies to:
NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the
Corporate Workgroup/Other option. This option allows you to use Messaging
Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your
installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In
About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate" if you have the
Corporate Workgroup installation.
SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to add the Microsoft Outlook 98 Address Book service
to a profile, Outlook Address Book may not be in the list of available
services.
CAUSE
A missing or damaged file, or an invalid file can
cause this problem.
RESOLUTION
Add, or rename and replace the Contab32.dll and Mapisvc.inf files.
If the Contab32.dll and Mapisvc.inf files are already installed, rename them by following these steps:
- Click Start on the taskbar, and then click Shut Down.
- In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode," and then click Yes.
- When the computer restarts, at the MS-DOS prompt, type the following
cd\windows\system
and then press ENTER to change to the System folder.
- Type the following:
ren contab32.dll contab32.old
and press ENTER to rename the Contab32.dll file.
- Type the following:
ren mapisvc.inf mapisvc.old
and press ENTER to rename the Mapisvc.inf file.
- Type the following
exit
and press ENTER to return to Windows.
In Windows, add the files to the System Folder.
- Click Start on the taskbar, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Microsoft Outlook 98 on the Install/Uninstall tab, and click Add/Remove.
- Click Add New Components in the Maintenance Wizard.
- If prompted, click Install From CD or Install From Web as
appropriate.
- If prompted to have Active Setup check for installed components,
click Yes.
- After Setup checks your installed components, click to select the
"Corporate or Workgroup E-mail Service" check box (under Mail
Components).
- When you receive the following message, click Yes:
Corporate or Workgroup E-mail Service is already installed.
Do you want to reinstall this component?
- Click Next, and continue through the wizard.
MORE INFORMATION
To verify or install the Outlook Address Book Service, follow these steps:
- Start Outlook.
- On the Tools Menu, click Services.
- Confirm that the Outlook Address Book service is in the list of
available information services.
If it is not, follow these steps:
- Click Add.
- In the "Add Service to Profile" box, click to select the Outlook Address Book from the list of available services.
If Outlook Address Book is not listed, follow the steps in the "Resolution" section of this article.
