ID: Q185362

The information in this article applies to:

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate Workgroup/Other option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate" if you have the Corporate Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook 98, when you attempt to send or receive an e-mail message, you may receive the following error:

MAPISP32 caused an invalid page fault in module INETCOMM.DLL at 0157:5e.
In some cases the page fault may occur in module Kernel32.dll and the address given may be different.

CAUSE

This error message may occur if you install the Windows Sockets (Winsock) 2 Update, but do not update Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) using the Vipup20.exe and Vtcpup20.exe files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, run the Vipup20.exe and Vtcpup20.exe files from the Microsoft Software Library. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Download the Vipup20.exe and Vtcpup20.exe files from the Microsoft Software Library to an empty folder on your hard disk.

NOTE: These files may be downloaded from the Microsoft World Wide Web site. Using a Web browser, go to the following Web address:
    http://support.microsoft.com/support/downloads/LNP195.asp

  2. Double-click the Vipup20.exe file.

  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  4. Repeat steps 2-3 for the Vtcpup20.exe file.

To work around this behavior, revert to Winsock 1.1 by uninstalling the Winsock 2 Update. To do this, double-click the Ws2bakup.bat file located in the following folder:
<drive>:\<windows>\ws2bakup
Where <drive> is the drive letter where the Windows folder is located, and <windows> is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed.
