OL98: Edits Made to Attachments in Preview Pane Are Not Retained

ID: Q178024

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If you edit an attachment by opening it from the Microsoft Outlook 98 Preview Pane, the changes made will not be retained.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. The Preview Pane function is intended to be read-only, so changes are not saved.

RESOLUTION

To edit an attachment, open the message containing the attachment and then open the attachment.

MORE INFORMATION

The Preview Pane function allows you divide your Outlook window into two separate panes. The contents of messages selected in the upper pane can be viewed in the lower pane without opening the message.

NOTE: You can see the message attachment in the preview pane and open it by double-clicking it. You can then edit the attachment and apparently save the changes. But once you select another message in the upper pane, the temporary files used by the editing program are lost and the changes to the attachment are lost.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. On the View menu click Preview Pane, if the Preview Pane is not enabled.

  2. Compose a message to yourself.

  3. Attach a Microsoft Word file to the message and send it.

  4. Click the incoming message to view it in the Preview Pane.

  5. Double-click the attachment in the Preview Pane.

  6. When the attachment opens in Word, make a modification to the document.

  7. Save the attached document in Word and close it.

  8. Click to select another message or go to another view in Outlook.

  9. Return to the message with the attachment in the Inbox.

  10. Open the attachment.

RESULTS: The modification made in step 6 above no longer appears in the document.
