IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

When sending subscription offers to share folders from Microsoft Outlook 98, you may get the following error message:

Unable to find file newsubsc.oft.
This is followed by:
Unable to mail new subscription offers

CAUSE

The Office Templates folder is on a shared location. Even though the newsubsc.oft file is installed on the local computer when folder sharing is installed, the registry points to the shared templates location on the network and not the templates folder on the local computer.

RESOLUTION

Edit the registry to change the location where Outlook looks for the file newsubsc.oft.

MORE INFORMATION

When Outlook sets up the Folder Sharing, it creates a file, newsubsc.oft, in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\outlook
The registry however is pointing to a network, shared templates folder, because during setup of Microsoft Office 98 the users chose to keep shared items on the server. This is an option that can be controlled by the network system administrator while setting up the net installation of Office.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

Change the Path in the Windows Registry

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

  2. Type regedit, and then click OK.

  3. On the Edit menu, click Find.

  4. In Find What, type newsubsc.oft, and then click Find next.

  5. In the right pane of the Registry Editor, either double-click Default to open the Edit String window or right-click Default and then click Modify to open the Edit String window.

  6. Type the complete path and file name in the Value Data box, and then click OK. The default installation path for Outlook and the file name will be:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\outlook\newsubsc.oft
NOTE: If you are not sure what the exact path to the newsubsc.oft file is, click Start, point to Find and type newsubsc.oft. Click Find Now. Note the drive letter and path to the file and enter that in the Value Data box in the registry. In an environment where Outlook templates are made available to users from a shared location, the network path should be entered instead of the local, default path. If you are unsure of this location, contact your network administrator.

  7. Press the F3 key to continue the search.

  8. In the right pane, click Default, and again type the path and file name, as you did in steps 5 and 6.

  9. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
