OL98: Error Importing Appointments from Microsoft Excel

SYMPTOMS

When importing appointments from Microsoft Excel into Microsoft Outlook 98, you may receive the following error message:

Subject and Start Date were missing.


CAUSE

Microsoft Excel may have applied the Date format to the Start Date.


RESOLUTION

Export the Microsoft Excel appointment file to a Comma Separated Values (CSV) file, and then import the CSV file into Outlook.


MORE INFORMATION

The Microsoft Excel converter for Outlook does not recognize dates formatted with the Microsoft Excel Date Format. You must export the Microsoft Excel file as a CSV file, verify that the Start Date field name has no space in it (StartDate), and then import the CSV file into Outlook.

To Export the Microsoft Excel File as a CSV File

  1. On the File menu in Excel, click Save As.


  2. In the Save As Type list, click to select "CSV (Comma Delimited)(*.csv)".


  3. In File Name box, type a name for the file and click Save.


To Verify That the Start Date Field Name Has No Space

  1. In Microsoft Notepad, open the CSV file you just saved.


  2. Remove any spaces from the StartDate name field.


  3. Save and close the CSV file.


To Import the CSV File into Outlook

  1. On the File menu in Outlook, click Import And Export.


  2. Click to select "Import from another program or file" and click Next.


  3. Click to select "Comma Separated Values (windows)" and click Next.


  4. Type the path and name or browse to the CSV file you want to import, and click Next.


  5. Click to select the folder into which you want to import the CSV file, and click Next.


  6. Click to select 'Import "<filename>.csv" into the "<foldername>" folder,' and click Finish.
