OL98: Items Deleted From a Shared Mailbox Go to Wrong Folder

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Outlook 98, when you delete items from a Mailbox folder of another user where you have deletion privileges, the deleted items go into your Deleted Items folder rather than that of the mailbox owner.

Outlook provides a Windows registry setting to switch the destination of deleted items to the mailbox owner's Deleted Items folder.

To Switch the Destination of Deleted Items

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

To change the registry setting, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click "Exit and Log Off."


  2. Click the Start button and click Run.


  3. Type "regedit" (without quotation marks) and click OK.


  4. Move to the following entry in the registry:
    HCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Options\General
    where HCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER


  5. Right-click the DelegateWastebasketStyle key and click Modify. If the key is not present, see the "Create Key" section below.


  6. Change the Value data in the "Edit DWORD Value" dialog box to one of the following values:
    8 = stores deleted items in your folder)

    4 = stores deleted items in the mailbox owner's folder


  7. Quit the Registry Editor.


  8. Restart Outlook.


Create Key

If the DelegateWastebasketStyle key is not present, to create it follow these steps:
  1. Right-click on the General folder in the path defined in step 4 above.


  2. On the shortcut menu, point to New and click DWORD Value.


  3. Type DelegateWastebasketStyle as the name for the new key and press ENTER.


  4. Return to step 5 above.
