SYMPTOMS

You are using Microsoft Outlook 98 and notice that the program is very slow to start as well as being slow to quit when running under Microsoft Windows 95

CAUSE

This behavior has been noted when incorrect version of the files Msvcrt40.dll and Msvcrt.dll are installed on the computer.

RESOLUTION

The files, Msvcrt40.dll and Msvcrt.dll, may be the wrong version. Rename and replace both of these files.

On a Windows 95/98, both files should be in the C:\Windows\System folder.

NOTE: The following steps apply to computers running Windows 95/98 only. For more information about renaming files in Windows NT, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    ren Msvcrt40.dll Msvcrt40.old
and then press ENTER to rename the file.

  5. Repeat step 4 for the Msvcrt.dll file.

  6. Type "exit" (without the quotation marks) and then press ENTER to restart Windows.

  7. Extract a new copy of the Msvcrt40.dll and Msvcrt.dll files from your original Windows 98 CD-ROM (CD), Internet Explorer 4.01 or 5.0 CD, or your Outlook CD, or reinstall the version of Internet Explorer you use.
