SUMMARY

MORE INFORMATION

This article discusses these issues:

Installation Sequence with Microsoft Office 97 SR-1

Install the downloadable Office 97 SR-1 patch before installing Outlook 98. Installing SR-1 after installing Outlook 98 requires a full reinstallation of Office 97.

Diskless Workstations

You cannot install Outlook to run from a network drive or from CD-ROM.

Coexistence with Outlook 97

You cannot run both Outlook 97 and Outlook 98 under the same operating system. Outlook 98 installs system files that are newer than those used by Outlook 97. The only supported installation of both programs would be on systems configured to dual boot between Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.

Coexistence with Different Outlook Messaging Modes

You cannot run the Internet Mail Only and Corporate/Workgroup versions of Outlook under the same operating system.

Multiple installations of Outlook on a single computer are not supported. If you are installing multiple instances of Outlook, you should install them to separate operating systems on different drives or partitions. Outlook provides full support for user profiles so that multiple users of a computer may use a single installation.

Multiple Mail Profiles on One Computer

Outlook Supports multiple mail profiles with the Corporate/Workgroup only. The Internet Mail Only Email does not support multiple mail profiles, however you can have multiple internet email accounts in the mail profile.

Installation on Microsoft Windows NT

Outlook will only install on Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3. You must have administrative privileges to install or uninstall Outlook on Windows NT. This includes having administrative privileges the first time you start your computer after installing or uninstalling. This is necessary for the system to update the necessary registry entries.

Can't Reinstall Windows 95 over Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01

Outlook requires and installs Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01. Once Internet Explorer has been installed, the operating system may not be reinstalled without first uninstalling Microsoft Internet Explorer. A warning message is displayed if you try to reinstall Windows. Although the message can be ignored, doing so will result in a mismatch of files and registry settings that renders the system unusable.

NOTE: If you have Internet Explorer 5.0 installed, it is not necessary to install Internet Explorer 4.01.

Microsoft Mail Transport Not Installed

The Microsoft Mail transport service is not installed as a part of Setup. This service is available as a separate item which can be added using the Outlook Add Components in Outlook Active Setup.

NOTE: This transport will be available to users who have previously installed Windows Messaging System.

Back-up Outlook 97 Files

Before installing Outlook 98, it is a good idea to back up all your personal Outlook 97 files. The following items should be backed up from Outlook 97 prior to installing Outlook 98:
