OL98: Read-only Status Displayed in Message Title Bar

ID: Q181591

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If you open a read-only message from a public folder in Microsoft Outlook, the message Title Bar displays "-Message (Read-Only)." If you edit and try to save the message, you receive a prompt to save the message in the default folder for this item type. If you click Yes, Outlook saves a copy of the message, but the Title Bar still reflects the read-only status.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the original, read-only message in the public folder is the active window, rather than the saved copy of the message that is in your Inbox.

WORKAROUND

You must open and edit the saved copy of the message in your Inbox.

MORE INFORMATION

If you open a message from a public folder, the title bar reflects the read-only status. If you edit the message, and then click Save on the File menu, Outlook will display the following message:

Your changes could not be saved because you don't have permissions
to modify some or all of the items in this folder. Do you want to
save a copy of this item in the default folder for the item?

If you click Yes, Outlook will save a copy of the message to your default folder for that item type. For messages, the default folder is your delivery Inbox. The new message does not become the active window. Each attempt to save the read-only message saves a new copy in your default folder.
