ID: Q182743

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When replying to plain-text messages in Microsoft Outlook 98, the Uniform Resouce Locator(URL), My Auto Signature resembles:

     http://Myserver/MyShare <http://Myserver/MyShare>

CAUSE

This is a result of the HTML to Plain-text converter Outlook uses that attempts to be intelligent about the conversion and maintain as much as possible of the original text.

RESOLUTION

When the mail format is set to HTML and a Plain-text message is replied to, a URL that is part of your Signature may be misconverted when the message is opened by the recipient. This can be corrected by editing your Signature with the Advanced editor while the default mail format is set to Plain Text.

MORE INFORMATION

Edit the Signature With Advanced Edit

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

2. On the Mail Format tab, click to select Plain Text under Message Format.

3. Click Signature Picker, and click to select your signature. Click Edit.

4. Click Advanced Edit. Click Yes to the prompt:

This will launch an editor that is not part of Microsoft Outlook.
      Do you want to continue?"

This will open Microsoft Notepad with your signature in the edit window.

5. Edit your signature. On the File menu, click Save and then OK. On the
   File menu, click Exit.

6. In the Message format list click to Select HTML. Click Apply and then
   OK.

Your Signature will now display correctly for plain-text message Replies and Forwards.

Changes you make in the plain-text version of your signature using Advanced Edit will not override changes in the other formats (HTML or RTF).
