OL98: Virus Warning Message When Opening an Attachment

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook 98 when you click an attachment in the body of a contact to open it, you may get the following error:

Some objects contain viruses that can be harmful to your computer. It is important to be certain that this object is from a trustworthy source.

Do you trust this embedded object?


CAUSE

Attachment Security has been set to High.


MORE INFORMATION

Outlook sets Attachment security to High. You can change the setting to None, but doing this can expose your computer to viruses that can potentially damage it. It is recommended that you leave the setting on High.

Change Attachment Security Setting

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  2. On the Security tab, click Attachment Security.


  3. Under Security method, click to select your desired setting. If you click None, you will not be protected from any security problems. Use this setting only if you are sure all messages you receive are safe.


  4. Click OK and OK to close the dialog boxes.


Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Open a Contact and on the Details tab, type a date in the Birthday field. Save and close the contact.


  2. Open the contact and double-click to open the attachment in the Note field.


RESULTS: You receive the error mentioned in the Summary section.
