PPT2000: "Microsoft Visual Basic File Not Found" Error Copying a Slide

SYMPTOMS

If you select a slide from either the Slide Sorter or Outline views and then click Copy on the Edit menu, you may receive this message: 


Microsoft Visual Basic
File Not Found.
In addition, you receive the same message if you click Macro on the Tools menu.


CAUSE

The presentation contains at least one macro, and the code in that macro is corrupt.


RESOLUTION

Remove the macro code from the presentation. To do this, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Save the Presentation in an Earlier Version Format

To save the presentation in an earlier version format, follow these steps:
  1. Open the presentation that exhibits the symptom.


  2. On the File menu, click Save As.


  3. Type a new name in the File Name box.


  4. If you are using a Windows version of PowerPoint, click PowerPoint 95 on the Save As Type list. If you are using a Macintosh version, click PowerPoint 4.0 Presentation on the Save As Type list.


  5. Click Save.


  6. Close the problem presentation, and open the new copy.


The advantage of this method is that it is easy. The disadvantage of this method is that if your presentation contains any elements that are not supported in the earlier version of PowerPoint, those elements might change. The types of things that might change include:

Method 2: Copy the Slides from Slide View

To copy the slides from the Slide view, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click New.


  2. Click the Blank Presentation icon, and then click OK.


  3. In the New Slide dialog box, click the Blank AutoLayout.


  4. Use the Window menu to switch back to the problem presentation.


  5. Go to the first slide you want to transfer.


  6. On the Edit menu, click Select All.


  7. On the Edit menu, click Copy.


  8. Use the Window menu to switch back to the blank presentation.


  9. On the Edit menu, click Paste.


  10. For each additional slide you want to transfer, create a new, blank slide in your new presentation. Then, repeat steps 4 through 9.


  11. Once all of your slides have been copied to the new presentation, click Apply Design on the Format menu.


  12. In the Apply Design dialog box, navigate to the folder that contains your problem presentation.


  13. Click the name of that presentation, and then click Open.


While this method is more time consuming, you will not run the risk of losing any animation, transition, or fill effects.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
