XFOR: Return Address From MSMail User Reads SMTP:IMCEAMS

SUMMARY

When a Microsoft Mail user sends mail through the Microsoft Mail Connector and then out to the Internet using the Internet Mail Service, the Reply address may have the following format:

   My Name [SMTP:IMCEAMS-msnet_mspo_myname@company.com]

This is known as an encapsulated address. This only occurs when the Microsoft Mail user does not have a Custom Recipient defined on the Exchange Server computer. The Internet Mail Service "encapsulates" the address to give the recipient of the message a route back to the sender.

When the message is replied to, it is routed back to the Internet Mail Service that sent the message (@company.com in this example). The Internet Mail Service then removes the encapsulation and "pulls out" the 10\10\10 address for the Microsoft Mail user (MSNET\MSPO\MYNAME in this example). The Exchange Server computer then routes the message to Microsoft Mail based on its routing tables.
