PPT2000: Error Message: "Netshow encoder has stopped"

The information in this article applies to:

ERROR MESSAGE

During a presentation broadcast, you may receive the following error message on the presenter computer:

Netshow encoder has stopped... no data were received for multiple seconds
After you receive this error message, the Audience computers no longer receive the presentation broadcast from the presenter computer.

CAUSE

This error is caused when the Real Time Encoder (REX) is unable to access the CPU while slide animations are occurring. This only happens when you are using video, audio, and a continuous run of autoshapes with animations on a slide, where timings are set to zero seconds.

The number of animations and their total duration is CPU dependant. On a fast computer, 333MHz or faster, the duration of the animations would have to add up to 30 seconds for this problem to occur. On slower machines, 120MHz, it may take only 10 seconds worth of continuous animations to overload the CPU.


WHAT TO TRY

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Use Remote System For Audio and Video

To use a remote system for audio and video, follow these steps:
  1. On the Slide Show menu, point to Online Broadcast, and click Setup and Schedule.


  2. Click Change settings or reschedule a broadcast, and then click OK.


  3. Click the Broadcast Settings tab, and select the Camera/microphone is connected to another computer check box.


  4. In the box after the check box, type in the name of a nearby computer on your network that has either Office 2000 or Windows Media Tools installed on it. This computer must also have a sound card and at least a video capture board installed and functional.


  5. Click Update to finalize the settings.


Set Autoshape Timings to "Mouse-Click"

  1. From the Slide Show menu, click Custom Animation.


  2. In the Check to animate slide objects: dialog box, click to select the first selected item in the list.


  3. Hold down CTRL and click all of the selected items in the list.


  4. Once all the items have been selected, in the Start animation group, click to select the On mouse click option.


  5. Click OK.


Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
