SYMPTOMS

When you save a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation as a PowerPoint add-in (PPA), you may receive the following error.

PowerPoint can't save this file as an add-in because it contains Active X controls.
Even when the Active X controls are deleted from the appropriate slide(s), you will still receive this error message saving in PPA format.

CAUSE

If the Active X controls are deleted, references to these controls are remain in the PowerPoint slide.

RESOLUTION

To save in the PPA format, all Active X controls must be deleted. Each slide that has contained an Active X control must also be deleted, and then recreated. You can copy all of the other objects onto a new slide, then delete the original. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the slide that contains the Active X control, delete the Active X control if you have not already done so.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.

  4. On the Edit menu, click Delete Slide.

  5. On the Insert menu, click New Slide.

  6. Click the blank Autolayout, then click OK.

  7. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

  8. Repeat this process for any other slides containing Active X controls.

STATUS

This behavior is by design, and will be considered for revision in a future version of the application.
