PPT97: Branching Requires PowerPoint or the 32-Bit Viewer

ID: Q189964

The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows provides the ability, during an on-screen slide show, to branch to PowerPoint presentation object linking and embedding (OLE) objects that have been inserted into your presentation. Because these are OLE objects, they can be activated only by an OLE server, and the only servers for the objects are Microsoft PowerPoint and the 32-bit PowerPoint Viewer.

This means that if you are using the 16-bit PowerPoint Viewer to display a presentation that contains PowerPoint presentation objects, you cannot branch to those presentations unless PowerPoint for Windows is also installed on your system.

Versions of the 16-bit PowerPoint Viewer ship with PowerPoint 4.0, PowerPoint 7.0, and Office 95. There is also a copy of PowerPoint Viewer on the Office 97 compact disc, although the viewer is not installed as part of Office 97 setup. Versions of the 32-bit PowerPoint Viewer ship with Office 97 and PowerPoint 97 and they are also available for download from the following Microsoft World Wide Web sites:

   http://www.microsoft.com
   ftp://ftp.microsoft.com
