SYMPTOMS

If you embed a CorelDRAW object into a Microsoft PowerPoint 97 slide, a frame for the embedded Corel object is visible. However, no image is visible. When you view the object from slides view, or slide show view, you see the frame for the embedded CorelDRAW object but do not see the picture. When you print the presentation, the embedded CorelDRAW object still is not visible.

CAUSE

When you embed a CorelDRAW object into PowerPoint, CorelDRAW acts as the OLE server that is responsible for drawing that object. For example, when you select the object for editing, CorelDRAW displays the image in- place on the slide in PowerPoint. When you leave the editing session, the image is lost. This is because PowerPoint is unable to use the metafile information from CorelDRAW. This is a problem with PowerPoint, not with CorelDRAW.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one the following five methods.

Method 1

Insert the Corel Drawing (CDR) file as a picture file. This method inserts the CDR image as a vector based image, not as a CorelDRAW 6 object. As a vector base image you can ungroup and recolor portions of the image. To insert the file, follow these steps:

1. Point to Picture on the Insert menu and click From File.

2. In the Insert Picture dialog box, browse and locate the CDR file and

   click Insert.

Method 2

Paste the image from CorelDRAW as a Picture. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start CorelDRAW and open the image file. Then, select the image you want

   to copy to PowerPoint.

2. Click Copy on the Edit menu.

3. Switch to PowerPoint.

4. While viewing the slide on which you want to insert the image, click

Paste Special on the Edit menu. Click the option you want:

      Picture
      Picture (Enhanced Metafile)
      Device Independent Bitmap
      Bitmap

NOTE: If you click Picture, or Enhanced Metafile, PowerPoint inserts
the image as a vector based image, which can be ungrouped in
PowerPoint. While you can insert the image as a Bitmap, or Device
Independent Bitmap, you cannot ungroup the image and make changes
         to it.

5. Click OK.

Method 3

Link the CorelDRAW object into PowerPoint 97. This inserts the file with a link to the original file. Any updates you make to the CDR file in CorelDRAW also appear in PowerPoint. To link the object, follow these steps:

1. Start CorelDRAW and open the image file. Then, select the picture you

   want to copy to PowerPoint.

2. Click Copy on the Edit menu.

3. Switch to PowerPoint.

4. While viewing the slide on which you want to insert the image, click

click Paste Special on the Edit menu.

5. Click Paste Link, and click CorelDRAW 6.0 Graphic Object. Click OK.

Method 4

Insert the picture as a linked picture from the file. Like the third method, PowerPoint updates the image in your presentation when the image is modified. To insert the linked picture, follow these steps:

1. While viewing the slide on which you want to insert the image, point to

Picture on the Insert menu, and then click From File.

2. In the Insert Picture dialog box, click the Link to File check box,
find the CDR file, and then click Insert.

Method 5

If CorelDRAW 6.0 is not installed on your computer, copy the object to Word, which displays the image, copy it from Word, and then paste it into PowerPoint as a picture. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Open the presentation that is missing CorelDRAW 6 object.

2. Select the CorelDRAW object, click Cut on the Edit menu.

3. Open Word and go to a new blank document.

4. Click Paste on the Edit menu. The object is inserted into the document,

   and is visible.

5. Select the CorelDRAW object, click Copy on the Edit menu.

6. Switch to PowerPoint.

7. While viewing the slide on which you want to insert the image, click

Paste Special on the Edit menu.

8. Select the option to paste the object as a Picture, and then click OK.
