PPT97: Error Automating Viewer 97 on Computer Without Office 97

SYMPTOMS

When using automation to control Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer on a computer that does not have Microsoft Office 97 installed, you may receive the following error message:

   Error loading type library/DLL.

CAUSE

The OLB file for PowerPoint Viewer 97 has an incorrect import library (MSO97.DLL) reference. This incorrect reference makes it impossible to use the PowerPoint Viewer object model to automate the Viewer. So, to automate PowerPoint Viewer you must have the MSO97.DLL installed on the computer running the automation code.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
