PPT97: Problems Importing Photo CD Files

ID: Q157118

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to import a .pcd picture from a Kodak Photo CD Master Disc into one of the applications listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive the following error message:

This file is not recognized as a Kodak Photo CD (PCD) file.

If you click OK, you receive an error similar to the following:

An error occurred while importing this file.
   D:\PHOTO_CD\IMAGES\IMG0001.PCD

Alternatively, if you try to insert the picture into a PowerPoint slide, you may receive this message:

PowerPoint found an error it could not correct.

CAUSE

This error occurs if you are using the Kodak Photo CD import filter (pcdimp32.flt) that ships with Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0 or Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95, version 3.0. The programs that ship with Microsoft Office 97 for Windows are not compatible with this filter.

RESOLUTION

To fix this problem, update your .pcd graphics import filter to the version that ships with the Microsoft Office 97 programs. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Rename or delete the files named Pcdlib32.dll and Pcdimp32.flt.

Pcdimp32.flt is usually in the following folder:

      C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt

Pcdlib32.dll is usually in one of these two folders:

      C:\Windows\System (in Windows 95)
      C:\Windows\System32 (in Windows NT)

2. Obtain new copies of these files from your Microsoft Office 97
compact disc. You can copy both from the following folder (assuming
D: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive):

      D:\OS\MSApps\Grphflt

Copy these files to the same folders in which you found the old
   copies.

If you do not have an Office 97 compact disc, you can replace these two files by using Office Setup.

1. Start Setup for Office, PowerPoint, Word, Microsoft Excel, or

   Microsoft Access.

2. Click Add/Remove.

3. Click Converters and Filters on the Options list (not the check box

next to Converters and Filters), then click Change Options.

4. Click Graphics Filters on the Options list (not the check box next
to Graphics filters), then click Change Option.

5. Click the check box next to Kodak Photo CD Import, then click OK.

6. Click OK again, then click OK one more time. Click Continue.

7. Insert disks as directed by the Setup program.
