PPT97: Viewer Setup Cannot Remove Ppview1.cab

ID: Q171184

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you remove Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 97, you may receive the following error message

Setup could not open the file:
   '<C:\TEMP\>MSE000\PPView1.cab'.

where <C:\TEMP> is the path to your temporary directory.

If you click Ignore, the Setup program removes PowerPoint Viewer correctly.

CAUSE

When you install PowerPoint Viewer, the Setup program creates a file named PPView1.cab in a temporary folder named MSE000. When Viewer Setup is done, the MSE000 folder and its contents are deleted. In some cases, the Setup program incorrectly records the PPView1.cab as a file it installed. So, when you attempt to remove PowerPoint viewer, the Setup program tries to remove PPView1.cab which is no longer on your computer.

NOTE: The folder MSE000 is created in your temp folder (the default temp folders are "C:\Windows\Temp" for Windows 95 and "C:\Temp" for Windows NT).

RESOLUTION

Do not click Abort in this error dialog box. Clicking Abort may cause problems when you try to remove PowerPoint Viewer. Click Ignore and the Viewer Setup process will complete successfully. PPView1.cab is no longer on your computer, so it cannot be removed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer version 97.
