WD: Insertion Point Position Measured Incorrectly with Spacing

SYMPTOMS

When you format a paragraph in Microsoft Word for Windows and you change either the Spacing Before or Line Spacing option, the At measurement on the status bar, which indicates the vertical position of the insertion point on the page, will appear to display incorrect information.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Word for Windows listed above. This problem was corrected in Word version 6.0 for Windows.

Word for Windows has the ability to measure and display the distance of the insertion point from the top of the page in the unit of measurement selected in the Customize dialog box (in version 1.x) or the Options dialog box (in versions 2.0 and 2.0a).

Note: To access the Customize dialog box in Word for Windows 1.x, choose Customize from the Utilities menu. You can select inches, centimeters, points, or picas as the unit of measure. To access the Options dialog box in Word for Windows 2.0 or 2.0a, choose Options from the Tools menu. Under Category, select General if you want to change the unit of measure used in Word.

To display this measurement on the status bar, use the steps listed below.

Word for Windows Version 1.x

1. From the View menu, choose Preferences, and select the Display As

   Printed option.

2. From the Utilities menu, choose Customize, and select the

   Background Pagination option.

Word for Windows Version 2.0

1. From the Tools menu, choose Options.

2. Under Category, select View. Select the Status Bar option.

3. Under General, select the Background Repagination option.

If a paragraph is formatted with a number indicated in the Spacing Before or the Line Spacing option, this measurement will indicate the distance from the top of the page to the actual line (including the preceding blank lines). This measurement will not indicate the distance from the top of the page to the position of the displayed text.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

1. Open a new document based on the NORMAL.DOT template.

2. From the Format menu, choose Paragraph and set either the Spacing

   Before or Line Spacing option to 4li.

3. Choose the OK button.

4. Type a line of text.

5. With the insertion point positioned in the first line of text,

   check the At measurement on the status bar for the distance from the
   top of the page to the line typed in step 4.

Notice that the measurement is displayed as 1 inch rather than the correct distance 1.7 inches for the position of the fifth line in a document. This is because Word for Windows is measuring the distance to the top of the line where the space before the text is treated as one line.

Note: The Print Preview command correctly displays the vertical position of 1.7 inches.
