SYMPTOMS

In Word 5.x, when you open a document that was created in a later version of Word (and was saved in Word 5.x for the Macintosh format) the table of contents initially appears correct. However, if you update the TOC field, all TOC entries appear left-aligned.

NOTE: This problem occurs with tables of contents that have multiple levels.

The level (\l) switches in Word 6.x and later TC fields are lost when saving in Word 5.x format.
