WD5X: Can't Open Password-Protected WinWord Doc in MacWord 5.x

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

By design, Word for the Macintosh cannot open password-protected documents in Word for Windows version 2.x and later formats. If you try to open such a document, you receive the following error message.

   Word version     Error message
   ----------------------------------------------------
   5.0              Cannot read file.
   5.1              Cannot open password protected file.

RESOLUTION

To open the Word for Windows document in Word for the Macintosh, reopen the document in Word for Windows and remove the password. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Open the document in Word for Windows. (You need to know the

   document password to do this.)

2. In Word for Windows versions 6.0 and later, on the Tools menu, click
   Options. In the Options dialog box click the Save tab. In Word for
   Windows 2.0, on the File menu, click Save As and then click File
   Sharing.

3. In the Protection Password box, delete the password. Also delete the

   Write Reservation Password, if applicable, in versions 6.0 and later.

4. Click OK.

5. Resave the file.
