WD6X: Supplemental Converters Installed Locally on Network

ID: Q125410

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If you initialize Setup from the Word 6.0 Supplemental Conversions Disk with the "/a" administrative network setup option, you are provided three options for how users can subsequently access converters:

If you specify that users must utilize converters from the server, a subsequent workstation setup does not direct Word to access converters from

the server. Instead, Setup installs additional copies of each converter on

each user's local drive and registers each converter in the local user's Win.ini and Winword6.ini files with reference to the converter locations on

the user's local drive.

RESOLUTION

To correctly set up the converters, follow these steps:

1. Using a text editor such as Notepad, edit the Win.ini file and the

Winword6.ini file, so that the respective [MS Text Converters] and
[MSWord Text Converters] sections correctly reference the server
   location.

2. Remove unwanted copies of each converter from the local drives if disk
   space is an issue.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Setup program for the Word for Windows, version 6.0, Supplemental Conversions Disk. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

The Supplemental Conversions disks for Word for the Macintosh, Word 97 for

Windows, and Word for Windows NT do not include a Setup program and therefore do not provide an administrative setup option.
