WD6X: WP 5.x Paragraph Number Cross-Reference Cannot Be Updated

ID: Q132252

The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

When you open a WordPerfect 5.x document containing cross-references to paragraph numbers, the results of the cross-references may become 0 (zero) and you cannot update the cross-references.

For example, after you open a WordPerfect 5.x document, a cross-reference that should appear as

   See paragraph I.A.1

may appear as

   See paragraph 0

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Word converts all WordPerfect paragraph numbering ([ParNum]) codes to {seq} (sequence) fields.

Microsoft implemented the use of SEQ fields to overcome differences in Word and WordPerfect's numbering models. However, a consequence of this change is that cross-references to paragraphs numbered with SEQ fields, instead of heading or multilevel list numbering, are invalidated.

WORKAROUNDS

Use one of the following methods to correct this problem:

Method 1: Edit the Mstxtcnv.ini file

To convert WordPerfect Numbering/Outline feature to Word paragraph numbering, follow these steps:

1. Using a text editor such as Notepad, edit the Mstxtcnv.ini file

(located in your Windows program directory).

2. In the [WordPerfect5Conv] section, add the following entry on a new
line after the last existing entry in the section:

      FavourSequenceFields=No

3. Save and exit the Mstxtcnv.ini file.

Now when you convert WordPerfect 5.x documents, WordPerfect's numbering features will be converted to Word's numbering features, and paragraph number cross-references are maintained.

NOTE: Reverting to prior functionality may result in numbering problems caused by model differences between Word and WordPerfect that the use of SEQ fields was designed to resolve.

Method 2: Use Word Paragraph Numbering

In Word, remove the SEQ fields from the referenced paragraphs and apply paragraph numbering using the Bullets and Numbering feature. To do so, complete the following steps:

1. Delete SEQ field(s) preceding a referenced paragraph.

2. On the Format menu, choose Bullets and Numbering.

3. Select the Numbered or Multilevel tab (whichever provides numbering

options that best correspond to the current numbering scheme).

4. Click Modify.

5. Change the number to the correct value in the Start At box and click OK.

6. Once all referenced paragraphs are formatted with numbering, update the

cross-reference fields. Delete any extraneous characters that may
   appear.

Note: Deleting SEQ fields to reestablish a cross-reference may require setting a new sequence starting number in subsequent SEQ fields.
