WD95: Can't See HTML Source Code When Opening HTML Document

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) document, Word displays it similar to the way it would appear in a Web browser, instead of displaying the HTML source code and tags, such as:

   <HTML>
   <HEAD>
   <TITLE>Untitled</TITLE>
   </HEAD>
   <BODY>
   My Web page.
   </BODY>
   </HTML>

CAUSE

This behavior occurs after you install Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, if Internet Assistant for Word has not been installed.

This behavior is by design. Internet Explorer 4.0 installs an HTML converter (Html32.cnv) into the following folder:

   C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Textconv

After Html32.cnv is installed there, Word will use this converter unless you manually confirm file conversions when opening documents.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, select a Text Only conversion at the time you open the HTML document. To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the Tools Menu, click Options.

2. On the General tab, click to select the Confirm Conversions check box

   and then click OK.

3. Open the file. In the Convert File From list, click Text Only and then
   click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

If you do not have Internet Explorer 4.0 or Internet Assistant for Word installed, Word 7.x will open HTML documents as text only.
