WD2000: Update Installation Does Not Update Exclude Dictionary

ID: Q217471

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you update Office 2000 over your previous Office installation, the Exclude dictionary used by the previous version of Word is not updated for Word 2000.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must rename the exclude dictionary from the previous Word installation and move it to the new location recognized by Word 2000.

  1. Find the exclude dictionary file Mssp2_en.exc. The default folder location for Word 97/95 proofing tools is:

    Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof

NOTE: If you cannot find the exclude dictionary, see the "Determining the Path of the Exclude Dictionary" section later in this article.

  2. Click to select Mssp2_en.exc.

  3. Rename this file to: Mssp3en.exc.

  4. Move the exclude dictionary file Mssp3en.exc to the Office 2000 proofing folder. The default location for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95 or Windows 98 with profiles is:

    <Windows Folder>\Profiles\<UserName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof

Or Windows 95 and Windows 98 without profiles:

    <Windows Folder>\Application Data\Proof

NOTE: Word 2000 does not look for the exclude dictionary in Program Files\Microsoft Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof folder as did previous versions of Word.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

  1. To open the registry, click Run on the Start menu, and type "REGEDIT" (without the quotation marks).

  2. Locate and view the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\Spelling\1033\Normal

  3. The Normal key contains the value names and value data to the Dictionary and Engine files.

NOTE: The exclude dictionary is located in the same folder as the Dictionary or Engine files.

  4. Close the registry without making any changes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
