SYMPTOMS

When you use the AutoFormat (or AutoFormat As You Type) feature in Word, Word does not replace hyphens with an en dash. However, Word does replace two hyphens in a row with an em dash.

NOTE: To view the AutoFormat or AutoFormat As You Type option, click AutoCorrect on the Tools menu.

RESOLUTION

To insert an en dash, type the text followed by a space, one or two hyphens, and then one or no space, followed by more text. Microsoft Word automatically inserts an en dash ( – ).

For example: "See pages 3 - 10" becomes "See pages 3–10."
