WD2000: Cannot Insert Picture (Object) As "Float over text"

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a Picture From File or an Object into a Word document, there is not an option to insert the picture or object as "Float over text."


WORKAROUND

When you insert a Picture From File or an Object, Word (by default) places the picture or object in-line with the text of your document. There is not an option, as in earlier versions of Word, to insert your picture or object as "Float over text."

To change your picture or object to floating (text wrapping), use one of the following methods to insert your Picture From File or object as "Float over text":

Method 1: Set a Text Wrapping Style for Your Picture or Object

  1. Insert your Picture From File (or Object) as usual.


  2. Click to select the picture (object). When the picture (object) is selected, it will have a box with squares around it.


  3. On the Format menu, click Picture (or Object).


  4. On the Layout tab, click to select the type of wrapping you want and then click OK.



Method 2: Use a Macro to Insert Your Picture As Float Over Text

The following macro code inserts your picture with a wrapping style of "Top and bottom," as in earlier versions of Word.


Sub InsertPicture()
   With Dialogs (wdDialogInsertPicture)
      .FloatOverText = True
      .Show
   End With
End Sub

NOTE: The use of this macro causes Word to always insert your Picture From File as "Float over text," even if you remove (delete) the macro. To restore Word back to inserting your Picture From File as "In-line with text," replace your InsertPicture macro with the following:

Sub InsertPicture()
   With Dialogs (wdDialogInsertPicture)
      .FloatOverText = False
      .Show
   End With
End Sub

Method 3: Use a Macro to Insert Your Object As Float Over Text

The following macro code inserts your object with a wrapping style of "Top and bottom," as in earlier versions of Word.


Sub InsertObject()
   With Dialogs (wdDialogInsertObject)
      .Floating = True
      .Update
      .Show
   End With
End Sub

NOTE: The use of this macro causes Word to always insert your objects as "Float over text," even if you remove (delete) the macro. To restore Word back to inserting your objects as "In-line with text," replace your InsertObject macro with the following:


Sub InsertObject()
   With Dialogs (wdDialogInsertObject)
      .Floating = False
      .Update
      .Show
   End With
End Sub
