WD2000: Decimal Tab Alignment Lost When Viewing As Web Page

SYMPTOMS

When you create a decimal-aligned tab to align numbered text on the decimal point in a Word document, when you view the document as a Web page, the numbered text formatted with the decimal-aligned tab becomes left-aligned.

For example, the following decimal-aligned text, 


     3.5
   123.45
Appears as follows when viewed as a Web page (on the File menu, click Web Page Preview): 

3.5
123.45


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can use a left-aligned tab in combination with a fixed width font, such as Courier New, to produce the effect of decimal alignment when viewing your document as a Web page.

  1. Select the text where you want to align decimals.


  2. On the Format menu, click Font.


  3. In the Font list, scroll to select Courier New.


  4. Click OK.


  5. On the Format menu, click Tabs.


  6. In the Tab stop postion box, type a number where you want to align the decimals in your document.


  7. Under Alignment, click Left.


  8. Click OK.


You can now type spaces to align your numbers on the decimal point.

For example, typing the following aligns the number 3.5 with the number 123.45:

NOTE: All items between arrows denote key presses. 

<TAB><SPACE><SPACE>3.5<ENTER>
<Tab>123.45
The result, when viewed as a Web page, appears as follows:

NOTE: The indentation can vary, based on the tab stop position value you set. 

     3.5
   123.45


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
