WD2000: Embedded TrueType Fonts Are Not Displayed in Web Browsers

SYMPTOMS

When you view a Web page with Microsoft Internet Explorer that contains embedded TrueType fonts, your Web browser will not use the embedded TrueType font information and may perform font substitution when viewed on other systems.

NOTE: Word supports the ability to embed TrueType font information into HTML.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. Microsoft Word is capable of embedding TrueType fonts information into HTML because it uses a combination of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), cascading style sheets, and Extensible Markup Language (XML) to save Word documents as Web pages and be capable of robust round-tripping.

Microsoft Word uses XML to improve round-tripping of binary document information that doesn't have a visual representation. By storing data such as document properties, Word can preserve the information for future use. XML provides a method for storing pointers to binary data that cannot be represented in or used on the Web. Some examples of the data stored in XML or in files that are pointed to by XML include:

• Document settings
