Use one of the following methods to show or hide hidden text in your document:

Method 1: Manually Switch Hidden Text Viewing

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  2. Click the View tab.


  3. Under Formatting Marks, click to select or to clear the Hidden Text check box.


  4. Click OK.


Method 2: Create a Macro to Turn Hidden Text On or Off

The following sample macro turns hidden text on and off.

Visual Basic for Applications Macro:

Sub ToggleShowHiddenText()
   ActiveWindow.View.ShowHiddenText = Not _
   ActiveWindow.View.ShowHiddenText
End Sub 

Method 3: Use Show/Hide Button on Formatting Toolbar

The Show/Hide button on the Formatting toolbar turns on or off the All option for Formatting Marks on the View tab, under Options on the Tools menu.

NOTE: This command does not turn off any formatting marks options that have previously been individually selected.
