This problem occurs with any of the following list styles:

NOTE: This problem occurs when you open the Word 6.0/95 document in either Microsoft Word 2000 or Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following methods appropriate for your situation:

Method 1: Use the Word 97-2000 Import Converter.

Do not save your document as Word 6.0/95. Instead, use the Word 97-2000 Import Converter to open your Word 2000 document in either Word 6.0 for Windows or Word for Windows 95.

For additional information about the Word 97-2000 Import Converter (Wrd97cnv.exe), please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Method 2: Save the Document as Rich Text Format (*.rtf).

When you need to open your Word 2000 document containing a bulleted or numbered list in Word 97 for Windows and you do not have the Word 97 Import Converter installed, save your document in Word 2000 as Rich Text Format (*.rtf)..

Method 3: Reapply the bullet to the bulleted list.

After opening the Word 6.0/95 document, use the following steps to correct a bulleted list that starts numbering at zero:
  1. With the list selected, click Bullets And Numbering on the Format menu.

  2. On the Bulleted tab, click to select the correct type of bullet, and then click OK.

Method 4: Reapply the number to the numbered list.

After opening the Word 6.0/95 document, use the following steps to correct a numbered list that starts numbering at zero:
  1. With the incorrectly numbered list selected, click Bullets and Numbering on the Format menu.

  2. On the Numbered tab, click Customize.

NOTE: The incorrectly numbered scheme should automatically be selected on the Numbered tab. If it is not selected, click to select it before you click Customize.

  3. In the Customize Numbered List dialog box, in the Start at box, type the number the selected list should start with, and then click OK.

Method 5: Use the Format Painter.

After opening the Word 6.0/95 document and creating a list that incorrectly starts at zero, use the following steps to correct the list:
  1. Select a bulleted or numbered list item that is correctly bulleted or numbered.

  2. Click Format Painter on the Standard toolbar.

NOTE: Your mouse pointer now appears as an I-beam with a paint brush attached.

  3. Select the incorrectly bulleted or numbered list. After you select the list, the format of the list should change to the same format as your previous list and continue with the same bullets or numbers.

Method 6: Reapply the bullet or number to the list style.

After opening the Word 6.0/95 document and creating a list that incorrectly starts at zero, use the following steps to correct the list:
  1. With the incorrectly bulleted or numbered list selected, click Style on the Format menu.

  2. In the Style dialog box, the List Bullet or List Number style should be selected in the Styles list. Click Modify.
