WD2000: Misspelled Text Formatted as Small Caps Replaced in Uppercase

ID: Q204872

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you check the spelling of text formatted as small capitals and accept a change to a misspelled word, the word is replaced in all uppercase letters.

NOTE: This problem occurs when the Ignore words in UPPERCASE option is not selected (on the Tools menu, click Options and then click the Spelling and Grammar tab).

This can also occur if text has been typed in all caps and you use the spelling checker to replace a word in all caps. If you reformat the text so that it is lowercase, the word that was previously replaced will remain in all caps.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following methods to work around this problem:

Method 1: Use Change Case

  1. Select the text that was changed to uppercase letters.

  2. On your keyboard, press SHIFT+F3.

NOTE: The text that was formatted as Small caps should still be formatted as Small caps, even though the text was changed to uppercase. When you press SHIFT+F3, Word switches the case of the selected text, and it should change back to showing small caps.

Method 2: Delete and Retype

  1. Select the text that was changed to uppercase.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Cut.

  3. Retype the text and then select it.

  4. On the Format menu, click Font.

  5. On the Font tab, click to select the Small caps check box, and then click OK.

STATUS
